The Secret Power of a Half Hour

Background

I have always been an active person. There were so many things I wanted to do, as well as so many things I felt I had to do. It was overwhelming. I wouldn’t know where to start. Then when I finally decided to do something… I would either feel bitter and resentful because I would rather be doing something else, or, I would feel guilty because I felt I should be doing something else. It was so frustrating. At the end of the day I usually ended up getting very little done and feeling upset with myself and with the day.

Lightbulb Moment

Then I came across a little book in the library. It’s called The Power of a Half Hour: Take Back Your Life Thirty Minutes at a Time by Tommy Barnett. This was literally life changing for me. He basicically says to divide your day into 30 minute time slots. Even if you only do 8 hours, that is 16 slots. Then schedule each activity you want or have to do into a slot. For that time period focus all your focus and energy into that activity. Wow!! So simple, yet so effective. I could not believe how much I could accomplish in just 30 minutes when I focused on that time. It still amazes me after so many years.

The best part is that at the end of the day I can feel good about what I have accomplished. I don’t always complete my daily list, but what is left can be done tomorrow. I enjoy my days and get things done I used to procrastinate for weeks – I can do anything for just 30 minutes. It really works well for me.

My Planner

I wrote this day planner more for me than anyone, but if you like it and think it will be helpful to you or a friend – well bonus for me.

The book covers everything I want to note or record in planning my day. There are 30 minute time periods from 7am to 7pm. I like to write myself a daily affirmation – an important start to my day, so a space for that. There is a space for special notes or goals and a space to write meal plans for the day. I always disliked coming towards dinner time and suddenly thinking of what I would make. There are reminders for water intake. My goal is 3 liters daily, so 12 little cups to check off.

I have included several blank lined pages at the back of the book. These can be used to plan household projects, trips, shopping lists, etc…

I use this planner almost daily. If you are a list maker and like to plan out your day this book is for you. It also makes a lovely gift for the “organizer” in your life.
